Signs a moisturiser is not working
persistent dryness, flakiness, or a tight, taut feeling shortly after application. Other indicators include increased breakouts or oiliness, irritation (redness, itching, stinging), and makeup not sitting well on the skin. If skin feels, looks, or acts similarly to before, the formula is likely ineffective.
Key Signs Your Moisturiser is Failing:
Persistent Dryness & Tightness: Skin still feels parched, flaky, or tight, especially shortly after application or by the afternoon.
Increased Breakouts or Oiliness: If the formula is too heavy, it can clog pores (comedogenic) causing acne or blackheads. It may also trigger excessive oil production as the skin attempts to overcompensate.
Irritation and Sensitivity: Stinging, burning, redness, or itching upon application indicate a reaction to ingredients.
No Improvement in Texture: Skin remains dull, rough, or lacks "bounce" after 4-6 weeks of consistent use.
Fast Absorption/Instant Dryness: The product disappears immediately, leaving the skin feeling thirsty again.
Poor Makeup Application: Difficulty with makeup application, such as patchiness or uneven, tight-looking skin.
What to Do:
Check Skin Type Alignment: Ensure the moisturiser matches your skin type (e.g., heavy creams for dry skin, lightweight lotions for oily skin).
Apply on Damp Skin: To lock in maximum moisture, apply products immediately after cleansing while the skin is still slightly damp.
Evaluate Ingredients: Look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to hydrate and repair the barrier.
Simplify: Temporarily strip back the routine to just cleanser and one moisturizer to test efficacy.
